Local implementation of German development cooperation

Since 2018, the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH has been supporting various of our projects in three of our five priority areas on behalf of the German Federal Government. A particular focus has always been on creating employment opportunities for young adults in rural Ethiopia.

Current projects

Piloting Vermicomposting aligned with Apiculture & Avocado: A Household Enterprise Model in Four Woredas (Nono-Benja, Boreda, lllu- Gelan & Ankober)

Duration: 01.11.2023 to 31.12.2024
In cooperation with the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, Menschen für Menschen has launched a worm composting project combined with avocado cultivation and beekeeping. In the pilot phase, a total of 2,100 families are to be reached in four project regions for the time being. Farmers in Ankober, Boreda, Kawo Koysha and Nono Benja will receive training, building materials for worm beds, worms, beehives and avocado seedlings. The measures are interlinked: worm compost improves the fertility of the soil and promotes plant growth. Harvest yields in the fields and orchards increase. In addition, the bees contribute to a better harvest, while the production of honey and the sale of avocados enable the families to earn a higher income.

Creation of employment opportunities in Arsi - Phase II

Duration: 01.12.2022 to 31.12.2024
In cooperation with the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, Menschen für Menschen is implementing a project to promote employment in rural Ethiopia. As its predecessor project was very successful, this project is being implemented as a direct follow-up project in eight districts of the same Arsi region in the regional state of Oromia. This project focuses on creating 275 jobs for women and young adults through the sustainable establishment of micro-enterprises in various agricultural value chains. As part of this project, the participating women and young adults receive training and materials for the successful establishment and management of their micro-enterprises. The resulting micro-enterprises include bakeries, wheat, bean and honey traders and small restaurants.
