Since 2022, the European Union has been funding a project at the Agrotechnical and Technology College (ATTC) in Harar. The aim of the project is to support small enterprises to improve their economic opportunities and income opportunities of the local population.

BIC Ethiopia (Business Incubator Communities Ethiopia) is part of the four-country BIC Africa network in Ethiopia, Somalia, Madagascar and Angola. BIC Ethiopia focuses on developing key resources, skills and ultimately first generation entrepreneurs for the fast growing Ethiopian economy. The main activities of the project based at the ATTC in Harar include the creation of business incubator hubs that serve as platforms for budding entrepreneurs and provide training, counselling and resources to develop and implement business ideas.

In addition, the project focuses on vocational training and capacity building to strengthen technical and entrepreneurial skills. Another focus is on promoting innovation and the use of modern technologies, particularly in the agricultural and technical sectors.

The project also supports start-ups and small businesses by providing infrastructure and access to financing to promote their establishment and growth. In addition, the job opportunities of young people and women is improved through targeted training measures in order to open up new income opportunities for them.

The project’s main target group comprises young people, women and small business owners in Harar, who should benefit from the improved educational and economic opportunities. In the long term, the project aims to promote sustainable economic development in the region by empowering people to pursue independent economic activities and improve their living conditions. This project makes a significant contribution to strengthening the economic independence and quality of life of the people in Harar.
