Development cooperation of Bavaria

The Bavarian State Chancellery has been funding various of our projects in Ethiopia since 2019 as part of the Bavarian Africa Package. These range from the promotion of coffee cooperatives to reduce youth unemployment in Dano, to emergency aid measures during the COVID pandemic, to the construction of schools and the equipping of healthcare facilities in the Amhara and Afar regions. In addition, an extensive reforestation project was realised in Borena to protect the environment and climate.

Current projects

Building and equipping of a TVET in Addis Ababa

Duration: 01.10.2025 bis 31.10.2028
Starting in October 2025, we will be building a modern Technical and Vocational Training Centre (TVET) in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa. From 2028 onwards, up to 800 new trainees per year will be trained there in the four areas of manufacturing technology, electrical engineering, automotive technology and textile technology. Thanks to high-quality equipment, trainees will be able to deepen their theoretical knowledge through practical exercises on modern machines. The project makes an important contribution to combating high youth unemployment and at the same time supports Ethiopia’s growing industry in training urgently needed skilled workers.

Pilot project ‘Ethiopian skilled workers for the Bavarian labour market’

Duration: 01.10.2024 to 30.09.2028
The pilot project ‘Ethiopian skilled workers for the Bavarian labour market’ combines the surplus of qualified young skilled workers in Ethiopia with the shortage of skilled workers that Bavarian companies are experiencing. We will identify at least 25 Ethiopian skilled workers in the fields of electrical, automotive and manufacturing engineering at our Agro Technical and Technology College (ATTC) and prepare them for the German labour market in the newly established ‘German-Bavarian Skills Hub at ATTC’ within just under two years and place them in various Bavarian companies with a shortage of skilled workers.
